Constant 1-3 second hangs.

Postby Imprezzion » 28 Dec 2010, 20:56

1. Which CM version you are playing e.g. 10LE, 10.10 Full....
I'm running CM10.94 Full.

2. Your (relevant) PC specs i.e. RAM, CPU, operating Syetem, Graphics e.g. 4GB RAM 2.2 core duo, Vista SP1 32 bit, Nvidia 9800GT
ASUS M4A79T Deluxe NB @ 2585Mhz - 4GB DDR3 @ 1566Mhz 8-8-8-24-31-1T - AMD Phenom II x4 b55 @ 3.76Ghz - Foxconn GeForce 9800GX2 1GB @ 710-1800-1100Mhz - Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Dutch.

3. Where the problem occurs: if in the game then is it HL2, Ep1, Ep2 & which chapter is it.
The problem occurs in any part in any of the 3 games when I crank up the resolution past 1280x720.

4. Add a screenshot if practical, or the exact error message.
The problem is, I ran a 1280x1024 monitor until today, which ran fine with 75fps vsync locked and stable.
Now I got my new 24" widescreen monitor today doing 1920x1080 60Hz vsync locked, and it's still perfectly stable FPS of 60, only I now keep getting total hangs (0 fps) and drops to like 5-10 FPS of like, 1-5 seconds long at random moments. It happens like, every 20 seconds...

I tried increasing heapsize to 512000 which made no difference at all.

Is it just my specs that can't handle it? Maybe not enough video RAM as it's only 512MB cause it's dual-PCB (SLI-like) setup means the RAM's are mirrored. Or is it just a setting in the CFG's or something I can fix easily.

EDIT1: Checked in MSI Afterburner what my GPU's VRAM usage is during the game. It's on a constant 510+ MB usage so it seems 512MB VRAM doesn't quite cut it in 1920x1080.
Still, is there any way to lighten up the VRAM usage with some commands?

EDIT2: Reducing the Anti Aliasing from 8xMSAA to 2xMSAA made my VRAM usage go to about 490-505MB. JUST enough to prevent the largest number of hangs, but they are still there when a lot of people or something like that are in the view.

A bit EXXAGGERATED overclock, try to low on 3.2/3.3 ghz, my pc has 2.50@3.2 intel core 2 quad q8300 and a radeon hd5570 with 1 gb ddr3 and lags nothings....

There we go, you have 1GB of video RAM. That's why your probably not lagging and I am.

Imprezzion, its your video ram.

Source Engine with CM can cause vram spikes up to 2 GB. Your 512 mb card can handle approx 1 gb vram with its hardware compression. Beyound that it will start to swap in and out unneeded texture memory every few frames. Therefore the hickups.

You can try to deselect the entry "Force Preload of NPC Resources" and "Force Preload of other Resources" in the configurator. It may help a little bit.

That fixed most of the hangs and I can still use 8x QAA.
I also notice my GPU is only using one of them, not both, and my CPU is only using 2 cores out of the 4 cores it has even though Multithreading is on in Konfigurator.

I've tried forcing it by using -threads 4 -r_threaded_particles 1 and -r_threaded_renderables 1 in the commandline but it doesn't change a thing...

Commandline currently has -novid -sv_cheats 1 -mem_max_heapsize 2048000 -threads 4 -r_threaded_particles 1 -r_threaded_renderables 1

Anything wrong here or can't this game / engine support SLI or multiGPU / more then 2 threads.
