Look at your system tray, did you close Steam?

It works with steam. Did you close steam when you installed this mod? If not then you have to reinstall it or play without steam. Also do you start it from the Start menu? If you make shortcuts anywhere else it will cause the game to crash with steam running. Check if both you HL2 games AND your SDK tools are up to date.

As I already do all what you say(the re-install without steam) and run from its own shortcuts and my SDK tools and HL2 are up to date yet it works without steam

Thought I'd chime in and say mine is doing the exact same thing but what's weird is that it worked fine last week. The game is crashing before it can get to the menu.

I'm running CM v. 10.90.

Vista x64
pair of 470gtx cards sli w/nvidia 260.99 drivers.

I tried installing the latest x64 visual C++ 2010 distributable with no luck fixing the problem.

I'm currently re-installing CM10 with steam closed.

Still weird though that it just up and stopped working out of thin air. :|

Edit: other system specs

Core I7 D0 revision 920 @ 4 ghz
ASUS P6T Deluxe
128 gig Crucial RealSSD C300
6 Gigs Mushkin DDR3 1600

well it seems the re-install fixed it. weird.. one thing worth noting is that I tried a re-install before I posted my initial post there but I did a full path upgrade in this order

CM 10 full

then 10.30

then 10.40 then the 10.42 hotfix then 10.90

Didn't fix the issue. (yes steam was closed the whole time)

Then after an uninstall, I did the base cm10 install then just went straight to 10.90 and it seems to have worked this time.

So marwan, try that if you haven't already.

I don't know if it makes any difference or not but on both of those installs, I right clicked the setup.exe file and specifically told it to run as admin (even though my account is an admin account)
